William Henry Sealy (1861-1938)
Annie Marie Allen (1858-1911)
William Henry Sealy was born September 8, 1861 in Hobart to James Broughton Sealy and Frances Elizabeth Broughton. By the late 1880s, he was living in Bothwell, managing agricultural property, and later co-owning Sealy Bros coach services between Bothwell and Apsley. In 1891, he applied for a licence for the Apsley Hotel, and after his brother George’s death the same year, inherited several properties in Bothwell and Apsley.
On December 11, 1894, William married his widowed sister-in-law, Annie Marie Sealy (nee Allen), in Hobart. They had one daughter, Rita Sealy (1896). William was active in property dealings, storekeeping, and hotel management, and frequently served as a juror at inquests. He was also involved in community efforts, notably helping to fight the devastating Norwood and Dennistoun bushfires in 1905. Annie died in 1911. William continued to manage and sell property throughout the 1920s, including land in Dalrymple and Patrick Streets, Bothwell.
William died September 23, 1938 in Hobart, aged 77, and was buried in Bothwell Cemetery.

BOTHWELL. The weather for the last few days has been very hot, and on the 11th inst bush fires were raging. At about 1 pm a fire was noticed near the river, on the Dennistoun estate, travelling towards Norwood. A strong westerly wind was blowing which drove the fire over some long dry grass towards the Norwood barn and woolshed with lightning like rapidity. Every effort was made by the men on the property to save the building but the task was hopeless, and in a few minutes the building was burnt to the ground. The alarm was given in the township, and Messrs W H Sealy, E S Arnett, Leo White, and others promptly had horses and carts ready, and drove out all available men to Norwood where they were able to check the fire and save some of the fences. After making everything as safe as possible, the workers hurried to Dennistoun, in which direction the fire was then travelling, and after working until midnight, it was checked there also. No buildings were burnt at Dennistoun, but some miles of fencing were destroyed. Trooper Summers, who was on the scene from the first, was able, with the assistance of J Chivers and others whose names I have not heard, to save about 1,000 sheep, which were in danger on Dennistoun Plains, and were driven to a place of safety. They also rescued about 200 more, which were surrounded by fire close to Norwood. Some of the latter were probably scorched. It is impossible to estimate the amount of damage at present, but I understand that the Norwood barn and woolshed were insured. A big fire seems to be raging in the direction of the Blue Hill, and, in fact, fires seem to be all around.
February 19, 1911 - Death of his spouse Annie Marie (Allen) Sealy from phthisis at the age of 52 years at Bothwell.
