SHOOTING WITH INTENT. William Love, a lad about 16 years of age, was placed in the dock charged with having on the 28th day of May last, fired a gun loaded with shot at Joseph Crockett, the younger, unlawfully and maliciously, and with intent to do some grievous bodily harm.
The prisoner who was defended by Mr Graves pleaded not guilty.
Joseph Crockett, a lad of 15, employed by Mr Reid at Bothwell, deposed that on the 28th May last he was minding certain property keeping the crows away, he had a gun loaded with shot; the prisoner and a lad named Charles Gossage went to him and as they were going duck shooting asked him if he would lend them his gun and dog; witness refused to and got over the fence to go to Mr Reid, when Love cried out to him to stand; he did so. Gossage then gave his gun to the prisoner who cocked it; Gossage then ran after witness, who also ran, the prisoner called "Stand, stand, or I'll shoot you" and he then fired, when witness fell and cried out and he knew that he was shot in the back part of the body. Witness got up in about a minute and the two other lads were standing looking at him. Love, at witness' request, then went to him and witness took off his clothes when the prisoner said there were only three or four shot in him. Witness said he would pull him, when the prisoner said, "I don't care a d____ I did not believe the gun would carry so far." The shirt and trousers produced by witness were those worn by him on that day.
To Mr Graves - The prisoner was between 50 and 60 yards distant from me when he shot me, we have been companions and have often been out shooting together.
Charles Gossage, residing at Bothwell, was called and corroborated the testimony of the first witness.
Dr Oldmeadow gave medical evidence, after which, Mr Graves addressed the jury for the defence and the Chief Justice summed up.
The jury in this case who had been deliberating over three hours then came into court and returned a verdict of guilty against the lad Love and recommended him to extreme mercy as they did not believe he was aware of the consequence of his act.
The Chief Justice said even without the recommendation of the jury he had made up his mind to deal leniently with the lad, and he did not want to sentence him to imprisonment, where he would be compelled to associate with criminals. His Honor then after consulting with the Attorney General ordered the lad to be sent to the Cascades Reformatory for the space of six months where he would be trained and disciplined.

BOTHWELL. At the Police Office on Monday, the 1st inst. Present : Mr A McDowall, Warden.
Margaret Crockett was charged with using indecent language in the public street; she pleaded not guilty, but the evidence of Constable McCarthy proved the charge. BOTHWELL. At the police office on Monday, the 8th inst (present: Mr A McDowall (Warden), Messrs W Langdon and A Ibbott, Js'P).
James Smith, a young man about 20 years of age, was charged with assaulting Margaret Crockett. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Margaret Crockett, who is an old woman 70 years of age, and residing by herself in a cottage to the township, stated that defendant, between 10 and 11 o'clock on the night of the 30th January last, burst in the door of her house and came in; that she immediately ordered him out, and he then took hold of her dress and dragged her across the room; that she gave him no provocation or cause for doing so. The witness was subjected to a very severe cross-examination by Mr Ball (Ball and Ellis), who appeared for defendant. John Parsons was called for the prosecution, and gave evidence to the effect that he was in Mrs Crockett's house when defendant came in, and remained there until he went out, and in reply to the Superintendent of Police, who was conducting the case, stated that the defendant never spoke to or touched Mrs Crockett during the time he remained in the house, but simply spoke to witness and then left the place. This evidence so astonished Mr Perkins that he at once declined to ask any more questions, because he had relied upon Parsons to corroborate all Mrs Crockett had stated, and said it must be evident to all that perjury had been committed either on one side or the other. Mr Ball then made an able defence in favour of his client. The Warden, after consulting with his brother justices, and commenting severely on the aspect of affairs disclosed by the evidence, said the Bench did not think it would be wise under all circumstances to convict defendant, who had had a very narrow escape, and he (the Warden) hoped it would be a warning to him in the future. The case was then dismissed.

August 24, 1903 - Newspaper article.

INQUEST. TROOPER CROCKETT. HOBART, Saturday. An inquest was held today on the body of Trooper John Crockett, who succumbed at this General Hospital yesterday morning to injuries received through being thrown from his horse at Kempton on Thursday last. Mr Coroner Riddoch presided.
Dr Roberts, house surgeon at the General Hospital, said deceased was admitted by him in an unconscious state at 7 pm on the 20th inst. He then had a contused wound about an inch long on the scalp, and his skull was fractured. From the symptoms presented witness saw there was some pressure on the brain, and at once summoned the hospital staff. An operation was performed, and a piece of bone removed to relieve the pressure on the brain. Deceased, however, never regained consciousness. The cause of death was compression and contusion of the brain, caused by fracture of the skull. A fall from a horse upon a hard road would be sufficient to cause the injuries.
Joseph Crockett, brother of the deceased, identified the body.
Peter Larkin, a resident of Bothwell, stated he saw the deceased at 7.30 am on Thursday last at Kempton. Later on he saw him about 1½ miles from the township, when he was trotting along on horseback. Witness saw that the horse tripped, and deceased fell from the off-side of the animal. Crockett's head struck the ground, and witness immediately went to his assistance; but deceased seemed to have been at once struck unconscious by the fall from the horse, and never spoke.
The jury returned a verdict that the deceased met his death from compression and contusion of the brain caused by a fracture of the skull accidentally received through a fall from a horse.
