John Morris Colbeck (1829-1919)
Harriet Martha Chivers (1837-1879)
John Morris Colbeck (born about 1829, Cumberland, England) arrived in Hobart on 30 September 1833 aboard the Ann with his parents, John (a tailor, 40) and Elizabeth (44), and siblings William, Sarah, Rosina, and Hannah.
On 5 September 1859, at the age of 30, John married 22-year-old Harriet Martha Chivers at St James’ Church, Montacute, near Bothwell. Harriet was born about 1837 at Bothwell, the eldest daughter of George Chivers and Martha Inee, and was baptised there on 20 March 1837. John steadily acquired small Crown allotments in the Bothwell district between 1854 and 1856, purchasing and receiving grants totalling several acres. He and Harriet lived at Dennistoun and other properties in Bothwell throughout the 1860s and early 1870s. In the 1870s, John began selling his allotments in preparation to leave Tasmania. Several advertisements in 1874 and 1878 offered parcels of his land for sale in Bothwell. By the late 1870s, the family had moved to New South Wales. Harriet Martha Colbeck died at Wagga Wagga, NSW, on 17 May 1879, aged 42. John Morris Colbeck lived on to the remarkable age of 90, dying at Wagga Wagga in 1919.
