George Chivers (1804-1875)
Martha Inee (1810-1858)

George Chivers (born about 1804) married Martha Inee (born about 1810) on 26 February 1835 in London, England. Soon after, they emigrated to Tasmania, settling in the Bothwell district, where they raised eight children (Emily Jane, Harriet Martha, Eliza, Marianne, George, Frederick, Alice Maria and Robert William). On 1 April 1836, George was appointed Postmaster at Hollow Tree. The couple quickly became active in community life; on 20 March 1837, George and Martha were witnesses at the marriage of Samuel Geard and Elizabeth Schumack in Bothwell. George received a land grant at Little Spring Hill on 19 November 1841, comprising 90 acres 2 roods for £55 10s. In November 1846, he obtained a licence to retail wine and spirits at the Young Queen Inn in Dalrymple Street, Bothwell (renewed in 1847 and 1849) and transferred it to another proprietor in 1851. Surviving court records show several minor wage disputes in 1848 and 1850. By 1858, the family lived on the 90-acre property and leased a 1,765-acre sheep run in the Parish of Abergavenny from the Crown. Martha died at Spring Hill on 17 February 1858, aged 48, after “a cancer of protracted duration, endured with Christian meekness.” Her death notice noted she left eight children to mourn her passing. She was buried at Bothwell Cemetery. After Martha’s death, George received another land grant on 24 April 1860 in the Parish of Abergavenny, consisting of 455 acres. Two months later, he sold the original 90-acre property for £350 to his son-in-law, Henry Charles Colbeck. On 21 July 1875, George Chivers died at his residence “Shahweetah,” Bothwell, of heart disease, aged 71. He was buried alongside Martha at Bothwell Cemetery two days later.
