Henry Charles Colbeck (1835-1908)
Eliza Chivers (1841-1903)
Henry Charles Colbeck, born on 3 October 1835 in Tasmania, was the son of John Colbeck and Elizabeth Murray. He grew up in Bothwell, where he learned the ways of the land. In 1860, at the age of 24, he married Eliza Chivers, a 19-year-old from a nearby family, at St Luke’s Church in Bothwell. Eliza, born on 8 March 1841, was the daughter of George Chivers and Martha Inee. Henry and Eliza settled on their 90-acre property at Little Spring Hill, where they raised their family on a modest farm. Over the years, their family grew with eight children: George Chivers (1861), William Henry (1863), Martha Ethel (1865), Hester Mary (1866), Albert Charles Winthrop (1869), Ethel Adeline Alma (1871), Arthur Frederick Robert Wayn (1875), and Wilfred Hobart Russell (1881). Sadly, their family also experienced heartache. William Henry, their second child, passed away at the young age of two in 1866, and Martha Ethel, their third child, died in infancy later that same year. Hester Mary died in 1899. Eliza died in Macquarie Plains on 24 January 1903 after a long illness. Henry lived another five years after Eliza's death, and passed away on 18 April 1908 at the age of 72 at the Charitable Institution in New Town. He was buried at St Mary's Cemetery in Gretna, where Eliza had been laid to rest.
