22 Mar 1834 - Court of Assizes, Norfolk, England. Convicted of sheep stealing - sentenced to life transportation. Gaol Report - convicted before, married. Stated this offence - “Sheep stealing; once for clothes, discharged. Married, 5 children, wife Ann at Norwich.”

27 Oct 1834 - Departed from Cork, Ireland on board the Lady Kennaway bound for Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Hulk Report - good.

13 Feb 1835 - Arrived at Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Surgeon's Report - good.
Description upon arrival: Trade - farm labourer; Height - 5' 6¼"; Age - 46; Complexion - pale; Head - medium-small; Hair - brown; Whiskers - brown, small; Visage - long, oval; Forehead - high; Eyebrows - brown; Eyes - grey; Nose - large; Mouth - medium; Chin - medium-small; Native Place - Ketteringham.

2 Apr 1840 - Attended muster in Bothwell.

5 Jul 1841 - Russell, Bothwell / Charged with neglect of duty in causing the death of 27 sheep and other misconduct - acquitted.

1 Jan 1842 - Appeared on the census living at Bendeveron, near Bothwell.
John Bale (occupier), Patrick Wood (owner), wooden house, completed, inhabited.
Male (John Bale), aged between 45 and under 60, married, in private assignment, Church of England, shepherd.

7 Sep 1842 - Russell, Bothwell / Charged with larceny - discharged.

Charles Thorpe, for a valuable consideration paid to him, had sold the said land and premises to John Bale and the such consideration had long since been paid and satisfied but no Conveyance thereof had ever been executed - and a further consideration of Five Shillings paid by John Bale to Charles Thorpe is also expressed in this Memoralizing Indenture - 0a 1r 11p.
