Arthur Augustus Allen was born on June 28, 1856, in Bothwell, Tasmania, to Richard Allen and Julia Antoni, and baptised there in November. As a young man, he was active in local events, including ploughing matches where his family earned recognition. He witnessed local inquests and signed community acknowledgments, showing his involvement in Bothwell’s civic life. Arthur married Adelaide Luckman in 1884, and the couple had several children: Gertrude, Maude, Lucy, Charles, and Dennis, though sadly, Lucy died young. Arthur worked as a farmer and gradually inherited and acquired several properties in and around Bothwell, including land in Glebe, Schaw, Wilmot, and Adelaide Streets. After Adelaide’s death on April 24, 1901, Arthur married Ada Louisa Watson in 1905 in Bothwell. Arthur died on April 2, 1939, at age 82, and was buried at Bothwell Cemetery. His wife Ada passed away in 1962, aged 92, and was laid to rest beside him.
