Family Events

Edward Swindells was born on 24 May 1860 at Bothwell, Tasmania, the son of George Swindells and Sarah Smith, and was baptised there on 2 July 1860. He spent his life closely connected to the Bothwell district, working primarily as a labourer and small landholder. On 3 September 1884, Edward married Lois Abigail Medhurst at St Luke’s Church, Bothwell. Lois, born on 5 June 1857, was the daughter of Trayton Medhurst and Jane Christina Baker. Following their marriage, Edward and Lois lived in Bothwell, where Edward occupied rented property before gradually acquiring land of his own. From the late 1890s through the early twentieth century, he purchased several parcels of land around Bothwell, including holdings in Wilmot, Adelaide, and Schaw Streets, steadily improving his position as a property owner. Edward and Lois had two children, both of whom died in infancy. Their son, Edmund Swindells, was born and died on 24 April 1890, and their daughter, Ethel Swindells, was born and died on 6 March 1893. Both children were buried in the Bothwell Public Cemetery. Lois Abigail Swindells died at Bothwell on 22 December 1920 and was buried three days later in the local cemetery. Edward remained in Bothwell for the rest of his life and was still recorded there as a property owner in the 1920s. He died on 15 July 1940, aged 80, and was buried at the Bothwell Public Cemetery.
