Job Sims (1792-1866)
Magdalene Grayson (1808-1868)

Job Sims, born around 1792 in Pentrich, Derbyshire, England, was convicted of horse stealing in 1828 and transported to Tasmania aboard the Surrey. He arrived in Hobart on 14 December 1829 and worked as a ploughman. Described as a quiet and clean man upon arrival, Job was married with eight children in England. In 1832, he was reprimanded for prevarication while employed by Captain Patrick Wood. By 1838, he was granted a Ticket of Leave and in 1841, received a Conditional Pardon. Job lived in the Bothwell district, where he worked as an overseer and lived with his wife, Magdalene Grayson. They had three children - Frances (1845), Charles (1846), and Job (1850). Job died on 22 July 1866 at the age of 74 and was buried in Bothwell Cemetery. Magdalene Grayson, born around 1808, married Job in Longford on 31 December 1844. She was noted for her service to the Dennistoun Estate for 40 years. Magdalene passed away on 24 November 1868 at the age of 60 and was buried beside her husband in Bothwell Cemetery.
