Abt 1817 - John Pulford was born in Suffolk, England. (1)

Abt 1820 - Emma Fowler was born in Bedminster, Somerset, England. (2)

8 Apr 1836 - John was convicted at the Quarter Sessions in Suffolk, England of stealing eleven stone of pork and was sentenced to 7 years transportation. Gaol Report - character and connections indifferent. He stated his offence as "Stealing pork, prosecutor Mr Marriett. Single." (3)

4 Aug 1836 - The barque Henry Porcher departed Portsmouth, Hampshire, England with 260 male convicts on board, including John, bound for Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, Australia. (4)

15 Nov 1836 - Arriving in Hobart after a 3-month, 11-day voyage, John's conduct was reported as good. He was 5' 5½" and a 21-year-old man with the ability to plough and reap. (1,3)

31 Mar 1837 - Assigned to Mr Marzetti, Ouse / Being on the premises of Roderick McKenzie at an improper hour. Case dismissed. (3)

11 Apr 1837 - John attended muster in Bothwell. (3)

12 Jan 1841 - Ticket of Leave approved for John. (3)

Jun 1842 - Emily Fowler, daughter of Thomas Fry and Emma Fowler, was born in England. (5)

1 Jul 1842 - John's Conditional Pardon was approved. (3)

25 Mar 1844 - Emma was convicted at the Quarter Sessions in Wells, Somerset, England for receiving stolen goods and sentenced to 10 years transportation. Gaol Report - first conviction, single. She stated her offence as "Receiving stolen work Boyes, for stealing wood one month, single, 1 child. Father of my child Thomas Fry transported about 3 years ago for 10 years." (2)

8 Sep 1844 - The barque Tasmania departed London, England with 191 female convicts on board, including Emma and her daughter Emily, bound for Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, Australia. (6)

20 Dec 1844 - Arriving in Hobart after a 3-month, 12-day voyage, Emma was described as a single, 26-year-old house servant who could both read and write. She was 5' tall with a brown complexion, a small head and a high forehead. She had brown hair, light brown eyebrows, hazel eyes, a pointed nose, wide mouth and a round chin. E J F H were tattoed on her right arm,  and J D on her left arm. (2)

27 Dec 1844 - Emma's daughter, Emily, was admitted to the Queen's Orphanage in New Town at the age of 2 years, 6 months. (5)

1845 - Certificate of Freedom approved for John. (3)

1 Jul 1845 - Emma became a 2nd class passholder. (2)

18 Jan 1846 - Emma became a 3rd class passholder. (2)

Dec 1846 - Permission to marry was approved for John Pulford, free and Emma Fowler, Tasmania. (7)

11 Jan 1847 - John Pulford, a 30-year-old farmer, married Emma Fowler, a 27-year-old servant, at St Luke's Church in Bothwell according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the United Church of England and Ireland. Witnessed by Thomas Savage and Caroline Savage. (8)

16 Feb 1847 - John Roderick Pulford was born at the Blue Hills, as reported by a neighbour, Caroline (Munday) Savage, on March 29. (9)

29 Mar 1847 - John, a shepherd, and Emma lived at the Blue Hills. (9)

10 Oct 1847 - John was baptised in Bothwell. (10)

3 Mar 1848 - William Pulford was born in Bothwell, as reported by his father John on April 4. (11)

16 Jan 1856 - Charles Pulford was born in Bothwell, as reported by Frederick Teush on February 12. (20)

3 Feb 1862 - Michael McCarthy, of full age and a shepherd, married Emily Fowler, a 19-year-old spinster, at St Luke's Church in Bothwell according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the United Church of England and Ireland. Witnessed by John Pulford, Martha Jackman and William Wood Hughes. (23)

24 Jan 1863 - Newspaper article.

On Monday morning, the 19th, intelligence was brought in from the Blue Hills, that a lad, about 11 years of age, son of a shepherd named John Pulford, in the service of Mr Duncan McRae, of the Blue Hills, had accidentally shot himself, whilst out shooting opossums the previous evening. Dr Campbell at once proceeded to the scene of the accident, although, from the account brought in by the messenger, he had but slight hopes of his arriving, in time to be of service. (24)

8 Jan 1871 - Thomas Pulford, a 21-year-old bachelor and farmer, married Mary Maud Best, a 22-year-old spinster and a lady, in Oatlands according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Catholic Church by Banns. Witnessed by James Byrne and Catherine Pulford. (25)

25 Mar 1871 - William Pulford, a 23-year-old shepherd, married Diana Doddridge, a 17-year-old spinster, at Oatlands according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England by Banns. Witnessed by Samuel Pulford and Mary Ann Matilda Doddridge. (26)

1875 - Samuel Pulford married Catherine Cummins in Victoria. (27)

29 Jan 1875 - Newspaper advertisement.

CUMBERLAND ELECTION. To Maurice Weston, Esq. Sir, A vacancy having occurred in the representation of Cumberland by the resignation of John Swan, Esq, we, the undersigned, request that you will allow yourself to be put in nomination to fill the vacancy... John Pulford. (28)

22 Apr 1878 - Charles Pulford, a 22-year-old bachelor and farmer, married Rosina McCarthy, a 19-year-old spinster in Hamilton according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England by Banns. Witnessed by Alfred Cooper and Margaret Cooper. (29)

11 Jun 1879 - James Doddridge, a 23-year-old bachelor and shepherd, married Catherine Eliza Pulford, a 24-year-old spinster, at St Luke's Church in Bothwell according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England by Licence. Witnessed by Eliza Ann Byrne and James Byrne. (30)

13 Feb 1880 - John Pulford died at Hollow Tree, near Bothwell, from English cholera at the age of 65 according to his convict records, as reported by undertaker, David Lumsden, on February 14. He was buried at St Peter's Cemetery in Hamilton on February 15. (31,32)

PULFORD - On February 13, 1880, at his residence, Hollow Tree, John Pulford, in the 72nd year of his age. Respected by all who knew him. Victorian papers please copy. (33)

12 Nov 1891 - Emma (Fowler) Pulford died in Hamilton at the age of 73 from senile debility and was buried at St Peter's Cemetery in Hamilton. (34,35)
