James Moyes (1841-1892)
Harriet North (1843-1924)
James Moyes was born about 1841 in Tasmania, the son of William Moyes and Jessie Taylor. Harriet North was born at Bothwell on May 26, 1843, to William North and Sarah Bowden and baptised there the following month. On October 21, 1869, James married Harriet at St Luke’s Church in Bothwell. They had no children. During the 1870s, James worked variously as a butcher and publican and was regularly listed in rate books and licensing notices. In 1889, they acquired Clydeville, an 18-acre property bounded by Wentworth, Logan and River streets. James served as foreman of an inquest in 1880, a juror in several others during the 1880s, and held 120 shares in the Campbell’s Reward Gold Mining Company. By 1890, he was publican of the Castle Hotel. On December 6, 1892, at only 51, James Moyes died at Bothwell from chronic convulsions and was buried at Bothwell Cemetery two days later. Harriet remained at Clydeville for the next three decades. She died at her home on November 15, 1924, at the age of 81. She was also buried at Bothwell Cemetery.
