DREADFUL SHIPWRECKS. On Friday, the 26th September, the weather was dark and cloudy, and during the night it blew strong from the northward, accompanied with heavy rain; the following morning there was considerably less wind, and the barometer rose from 29 74 to 29 89, and continued throughout the day at the latter point. It however fell again towards the evening, and by midnight it blew a violent gale, with hard squalls of rain. Shortly before four o'clock on Sunday morning, the barometer was at the unusually low point of 29 53, and the gale had increased to a hurricane, accompanied with vivid lightning and loud peals of thunder. At day-break, the Waterloo was riding at anchor not far from the strand. The gale moderated after the thunderstorm, and as the wind was more to the westward, it was generally supposed the Waterloo would be saved. Soon after ten o'clock the wind backed to the northward, and the weather became squally, with rain, when the Waterloo hoisted her foretop mast staysail, (which did not pay the bow round), and in a few minutes she took the strand with the larboard quarter on, and the bow obliquely seaward from the beach. She rolled several times rapidly and heavily, which soon caused her main and mizen masts to go by the board; fortunately, the masts fell shore-ward, and in some degree steadied the vessel, but in fifteen minutes the upper works separated from the bottom, and in less than two hours the ship was in fragments - literally in thousands of pieces. Drowned, by the Wrecked Ship Waterloo - John Cheverton, boatswain; R J Wilson, carpenter; Edward Jones, sailmaker; Joseph Roberts, William Allen, John Cameron, James Healey, Richard Boyes, James Emplick, William Abrahams, John Brown, able seamen; John Dickson, Charles Mackenzie, apprentices; Leivis Soward, boy; 143 convicts; 4 women; 14 children; 15 soldiers. MAYOR'S COURT. Mason v Hunt. This was an information laid by the City Inspector, against Henry Hunt of Bothwell for having on the 16th December obstructed the carriage way in Bathurst-street with a waggon. No appearance of defendant who was fined five shillings with costs. His Worship remarked in this, that the Court had no desire to inflict anything more than a nominal penalty which would have the effect of establishing a principle. It was to be hoped it would lead to some remedy for what was no doubt an existing difficulty. People came into town with loaded drays during the night and there was no place to which they could go to leave their drays. Perhaps the difficulty might be met by carrying lights. His Worship regretted to have to take any measure which might appear harsh or calculated to injure business, but the practice will be a very dangerous one and was an undoubted obstruction. (19)
