Ellen Hayes (1825-1920)

👨🏻‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Events

Charles Gossage was born about 1822, although his place of birth remains unknown. By the late 1840s, he was in Van Diemen’s Land, and on 6 August 1849, he married Ellen Hayes at Holy Trinity Church, Hobart. Ellen, born about 1825 in Cork, Ireland, had been transported following a conviction for theft. Charles was described as a fishmonger at the time. By the late 1850s, Charles and Ellen had settled in Bothwell, where Charles pursued a varied working life as a storekeeper, licensed hawker, and small trader. Over the years, he occupied several houses and shops in Patrick Street, Alexander Street, and Dalrymple Street, frequently as a tenant of prominent local landowners. Charles was a familiar figure in the community, regularly serving as a juror at coronial inquests and appearing in local notices and advertisements. Charles and Ellen had several children: Richard Ingram (1850), Margaret (1852), Charles (1855), Mary Ann (1860), Jennie (abt 1867), and Ellen (born 1867). Charles died in Bothwell on 14 January 1889, aged 67, and was buried in the Public Cemetery. Ellen survived him by more than thirty years, spending her final years with family in New Zealand, where she died on 9 August 1920.
