Family Timeline

Edward Simon Arnett was born around 1808 in Yorkshire, England. In 1828, at age 20, he married Elizabeth Wilkinson in Sculcoates, Yorkshire. The couple had several children while living in Liverpool, including Edward (1832), Elizabeth (1835), and Simon (1837). George was born in Tasmania in 1839.

In March 1837, Edward was convicted of coining offences in Lancaster and sentenced to life transportation. He arrived in Hobart in October 1837 aboard the Recovery, described as a cabinet maker with a fresh complexion and pockmarked face. His wife and children followed him to Tasmania around 1839.

After Elizabeth’s death in 1841 at Hamilton, Edward remarried in 1847 to Phoebe Holmes, a widow. They had two daughters: Isabella (1847) and Fannie (1849). Edward worked as a carpenter and was active in the Bothwell and Hobart communities, serving on inquest juries and contributing to church and civic matters. He earned a Ticket of Leave and later a Conditional Pardon for good conduct.

His children settled across Tasmania and New South Wales. Several married in Bothwell, while others moved interstate. Edward spent his final years in Bothwell, where he died on 30 December 1880, aged 72, and was buried alongside his first wife.
