Thomas Anderson (1806-1887)
Christian Turnbull (1816-1891)
Thomas Anderson was born in Scotland around 1806. He married Christian Turnbull, born about 1816, and the couple began their family in Leslie, Fife, where their first three children - Joseph, Margaret, and Andrew Turnbull Anderson - were born and baptised. The family emigrated aboard the Munro, arriving in Hobart on 3 December 1842. Thomas, Christian, and their three young children settled quickly into life in Tasmania, moving to the Bothwell district. By August 1844, they were living at Black Marsh, where Thomas worked as a carpenter. Over the next decade, they welcomed five more children - Grace, Ann, John, Elizabeth, and Thomas John, all born and baptised in Bothwell. Thomas became a long-standing and respected figure in the Bothwell community. He acquired land via conveyances and Crown Grants in Elizabeth and Alexander Streets. He was an active participant in civic affairs, regularly serving as a juror at numerous inquests between 1851 and 1870. His name appears on public notices, road district meetings, and municipality election nominations. In 1867, he contributed to the construction of the new United Episcopalian and Presbyterian Sunday School, noted as one of the builders involved at the laying of the foundation stone ceremony. The family experienced its share of loss. Margaret died in 1853, aged about thirteen, and John died the same year at just five years of age. Thomas Anderson died in New Zealand in 1887 at about 81 years of age. Christian survived him by four years, passing away in January 1891 in Dunedin.
