To the Honourable the House of Assembly of Tasmania in Parliament assembled.
The respectful Petition of the undersigned Landholders, Householders, and Inhabitants of the District of Bothwell.
PRAYETH:
That your Honourable House will be pleased to take into your most careful consideration the following Resolutions, which were unanimously passed at a Public Meeting held in Bothwell on the 8th Day of August, 1857, and which affect the future disposal of the Waste Lands of the Crown in Tasmania:-
1st. “That the Executive Government be petitioned to resume all lands now claimed under the pre-emptive right title, where the conditions prescribed by the Regulations of November 1851, under which such lands were assigned, have not been complied with.”
2nd.”That Government be petitioned to order a Survey to be made of all Crown Lands, including the before-mentioned, in the Colony adapted for agricultural purposes; that these lands be divided into allotments ranging from 20 to 100 acres, out of which any intending purchasers may select as to them may appear expedient or convenient, subject to the following conditions:- First. That a deposit amounting to five shillings an acre of each allotment so selected be paid beforehand, with a further payment of one shilling and sixpence an acre yearly for the subsequent ten years. Second. That the purchaser clear and fence in at least three acres of his allotment yearly for the same period; and also erect on it a house or cottage containing not less than four rooms, to be constructed of stone, brick, or sawn timber. Third. These conditions being fulfilled, the occupier then, and not before, to receive from the Crown a Grant in fee simple of his land.”
3rd. “That no individual under this arrangement shall be entitled to purchase more than 100 acres; and that every allotment be occupied bona fide by the purchaser, and that he shall have neither the right to sub-let it, or sell it, till his grant be completed. Every purchase of an allotment to have the privilege of renting 100 acres of Government land, if there be such available, nearest to his location for every 10 acres included in his purchase, on the usual terms.”
4th. “That all Township Allotments that have once been offered for public competition and not sold shall be open for purchase at the upset price without being offered a second time for public sale - the first written application to have the priority, and not to exceed three lots in one District.”
That having most respectfully submitted these Resolutions, which convey the sentiments of a numerous and industrious body of Her Majesty’s loyal subjects in Tasmania, they leave the subject in the hands of your Honourable House, feeling assured that it will receive that consideration which its importance demands.
And your Petitioners subscribe themselves accordingly.
