SOUTHERN ITEMS. A very sudden death occurred at Bothwell on Thursday morning, the 19th November instant. It appears that a journeyman blacksmith, named Martin Kirle, in the employ of Mr Robert Nichols, whilst in the act of driving a neighbour's fowls out of his garden between five and six o'clock on the morning above-mentioned, suddenly fell down dead. Mr Bowden, who happened to be passing deceased's residence about a quarter to six, on his way to the Clyde, found him lying in his garden a few yards from his door, face downwards, and his left arm underneath. The body was still warm, but life was quite extinct. An inquest was held on Friday, before Alexander Reid, Esq, coroner, and, at the desire of the jury. Dr Pocock, who had been summoned as a witness, performed a post-mortem. Dr Pocock deposed that be found no external marks of violence; the body seemed to be well nourished and in a healthy condition, but on opening the cavity of the chest found that the diaphragm had been ruptured: that a part of the liver and stomach had been forced up into the chest and were lying over the heart and lungs, between those organs and the sternum or chest bone; the immediate effect of which would be stoppage of the heart and respiration at the same time, followed by instant death. The jury brought in a verdict accordingly, that the deceased came to his death by rupture of the diaphragm. (38)
