13 May 1861: Peter Davie, a 21-year-old farm servant, married Mary Ann Miller, a 30-year-old housemaid, at St Luke's Church, Bothwell; witnesses: John Rampling Bale and Sarah Hill. [2]

11 July 1898 - Died at the Criterion Hotel, Gormanston, aged 58; cause: suffocation by fire. [3]

SIX MEN BURNED TO DEATH. Lynch's Hotel Devastated. A most deplorable disaster, attended as it was by the loss of six lives, occurred at Gormanston, on Monday morning about 2 o'clock, through the destruction by fire of the Criterion Hotel - a two-storey wooden building, of which Mr Charles Lynch was the licensee, and stood in Henry-street, facing towards the "Blow," now known as the Mount Lyell mine. The tragic circumstances which resulted in the demolition of the hotel and the burning of six of the occupants form one of the most gruesome records yet made on the West Coast of Tasmania, all previous disasters being happily less serious, when compared with the holocaust which was presented at the ruins of the Criterion Hotel early on the morning of Monday. The fire was remarkable for the fact that it spread with astonishing rapidity, the large building being burned to the ground in about half an hour, and this can be recognised by the horrible spectacle that was viewed by the spectators when the work of removing the remains of the unfortunate men who were consumed by that fearful element - fire. Death through this agency can only be conjured, and the only compensation to be drawn from this lies in the hope that the majority of the occupiers who succumbed to the scourge were suffocated before the agony of being literally burned alive had arrived. According to several who were early on the scene, it is stated that screams were heard from the burning building while the flames were in progress, sweeping away the hotel, but this circumstance will probably be cleared up at the inquest, which is to be held today.
