Henry Craig (1825-1889)
Julia Connolly (1826-1915)
Henry Craig was born around 1826 in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. In January 1848, he was convicted of stealing oats and cheese and sentenced to seven years’ transportation. Later that year, he was sent from Dublin aboard the Blenheim II, arriving in Hobart on 2 February 1849. Recorded as a 26-year-old weaver and farm labourer, Henry was of fresh complexion, freckled, and unable to read or write. A conditional pardon was refused soon after his arrival, but by 1852, he had gained enough trust to be appointed a constable at Bothwell. Julia Connolly, born about 1826 in County Cork, Ireland, was convicted of felony at Newington, Surrey, in February 1850. She was transported to Van Diemen’s Land aboard the Emma Eugenia, arriving in Hobart on 7 March 1851. Assigned to William Horne at Bothwell, Julia worked as a servant, later earning her Ticket of Leave and, in time, her Conditional Pardon. Henry and Julia received permission to marry on 9 March 1853 and married on 21 April at the Deputy Registrar’s Office, Bothwell. They established their family in Bothwell, and between 1855 and 1869, welcomed six children: Henry, Julia, Ellen, Samuel, Sarah, and Charles William. By the 1860s and 1870s, Henry and Julia were long-settled figures in the community. They maintained their home on High Street and raised their children there. Their eldest daughter, little Julia, died tragically in 1867 at just nine years of age, the result of an accident. Henry Craig died at Bothwell on 7 November 1889. He was buried two days later in the Public Cemetery. Julia survived her husband by more than two decades. She remained at the High Street home until at least 1899 and died at York Plains on 13 July 1915. She, too, was buried at Bothwell.
